Blocktober : plongée inédite dans les coulisses des jeux vidéo en développement

Comme chaque année, des développeurs profitent du mois d’octobre pour présenter les phases de « blockout » de jeux sur lesquels ils ont travaillé. Voyons voir ce que le Blocktober 2023 a révélé cette année !
Le Blockout, qu’est-ce que c’est ?
Si vous n’êtes pas familier avec ce terme, c’est normal. Il s’agit d’un processus qui consiste à utiliser des formes géométriques grossières, telles que des cubes, des sphères, des cylindres et autres, afin de bloquer le level design, les environnements de jeu et les ressources artistiques.

Cette technique permet de plus ou moins « figer » les environnements du jeu en cours du développement dans le but de réaliser des tests et d’en avoir une bonne vision générale sans nécessairement attendre les versions finales de rendus (textures, lumières, etc), qui sont souvent terminées à la fin du développement d’un jeu vidéo.
On doit le #blocktober à Michael Barclay, lead designer chez Naughty Dog, qui a lancé le #blocktober le 1ᵉʳ octobre 2017. Depuis, d’autres développeurs ont suivi la tendance et la tradition est perpétuée chaque année.
Les studios dévoilent des images de développement
On peut ainsi découvrir cette année une belle variété de blockouts. Certains offrent même une comparaison entre la phase de blockout et le jeu final. C’est notamment le cas avec Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi : Survivor, le DLC Phantom Liberty de Cyberpunk 2077, Sniper Elite 5 ou encore A Plague Tale : Requiem.
